During October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, on Wednesday, Oct 25th at 5:00 pm, we are pleased to present a screening of the award-winning, documentary Foreign Puzzle, followed by a discussion with the director Chithra Jeyaram.

Ms. Jeyaram will talk about how she approached the filmmaking process with respect, restraint, and sensitivity.

About the film: Foreign Puzzle is an intimate documentary that follows Sharon Marroquin, a Mexican-American dancer for 18 months as she communicates the impermanence of life through dance while juggling the roles of a recently divorced parent of a 6-year-old, a choreographer, and a primary school teacher amidst intensive treatments for breast cancer.

Filmmaker Statement: As a physical therapist turned filmmaker, Chithra's initial interest was to reframe cancer narratives for healthcare professionals and caregivers, encouraging them to see beyond the patient. However, as she immersed herself in Sharon and her son Dali's story, she recognized a broader focus encompassing parenthood, self-care, and confronting mortality while crafting a dance of impermanence.

Foreign Puzzle is an ideal case study for discussing ethics, negotiating access, and subject representation. The documentary poses crucial questions about the dynamic between the filmmaker and the subject, offering valuable insights for aspiring filmmakers.
